Papayas are known for their protein-splitting enzymes, especially papain. Papain is said to aid digestion and have a slight laxative effect. The papaya is also a vitamin C bomb: 100 grams of papaya contains 80 milligrams of vitamin C - the daily requirement of an adult is 100 milligrams. A fruit thus contains more vitamin C than the body needs per day.
