"I must try out fasting!"
How many times have you heard this sentence or even said it yourself.
So it happened to me - Alex - when Beate wrote to me in Instagram and told me that her mum, Elke Fleps (https://www.elkefleps.de) is a fasting companion. She offered me to bring me into contact with her without obligation.
No sooner said than done - I was already in the middle of fasting and I would like to share my experiences with you here.
Fasting is not equal to fasting
There are many different types of fasting, e.g. abstaining from alcohol and sugar, base fasting, Buchinger fasting and juice fasting are almost part of good manners.
All have to the goal of supporting the body with the body-own detoxification or even a dietetic purpose.
Buchinger fasting, however, is somewhat out of line. One also speaks here of therapeutic fasting and even claims that it can cure allergies.
With Buchinger fasting, one creates an empty leaf of nutrition so to speak and thus probably also makes a change of diet much easier.
During Buchinger therapeutic fasting, named after Otto Buchinger, a German doctor from 1878 to 1966, a small amount of energy (200-500 cal), vitamins and minerals is supplied with vegetable broth, juices and honey. This reduces the strain on the metabolism for the duration of the fasting. In addition, there are induced bowel evacuations (for this, it is essential to ask a fasting companion, as this can take place very individually), as well as metabolic supporting measures, such as daily physical exercise, dry brushing, liver wraps.
This form of fasting is often associated with the wish for a "spiritual cleansing".
So it is not just a matter of abstaining from food and drinking juices indiscriminately, but also requires some preparation.
Right at the beginning I would like to emphasize how grateful I am to have had Elke as my fasting companion all this time, otherwise I would not have gone through 200% of it.
Furthermore, I would not have taken the supporting measures so seriously and exactly these were decisive for me that I also did a great job this week.
And I can say that it was worth 1000%.
Why did I start?
I just felt full and overloaded.
Nothing was going as well as I was used to. In the end I felt really lethargic and eating no longer had anything to do with enjoyment, but rather with stuffing.
All my life I have had a messed up relationship with food, at 12 I developed anorexia and bulimia, could control it with 6 years of therapy, in my opinion even cure it, although it is said that this is almost impossible with bulimia.
I also had allergies and for years I had to fight with acne, which I finally got under control at the end of last year.
Since I wanted to have the need for a "blank sheet", i.e. a white page, I found "Buchinger Fasting" so interesting and most appropriate.
How did I do during the week?
Since I did the fasting with a fasting companion, it was actually not just one week.
It started with the first telephone call, during which we already agreed on an approximate time for my actual fasting week.
This was followed by two meetings where Elke explained everything to me in detail and in a wonderfully understandable way. By the way, she was always in constant contact with me during the whole week.
If she hadn't written to me every day, I would very probably have given up on the first evening, not because I was hungry, but simply BOCK.
And that is actually the freestyle of the first days. Personally, I wasn't hungry because I already felt so full anyway.
"Hunger" actually reached me relatively late, on the third day, when most people actually reach the so-called "high of fasting". As already mentioned above, the supporting measures helped me completely, because it was only the case in the morning.
And then on the last day: All of a sudden my "fasting high" came and I can tell you that is crazy! The days before I still held it for a rumor, but when I woke up I already felt an insanity change of feeling, was totally fit and even wandered for my apple ritual on a mountain. The first apple after 6 days with mountain view was legendary and Elke's idea.
Now I have arrived at the build-up days & these are also still considered as fast days, because you still can't eat and drink everything you want.
Currently I can only rave about it and I want to keep this feeling as long as possible and manifest it in my everyday life.
I feel totally fit, funnily enough I have less sore muscles after sports than usual and enjoy my food more. When my brothers get their third full plate, I am still sitting at my first portion and am satisfied. One week before I inhaled my food.
What has fasting brought me?
The Buchinger fast was a totally exciting experience to get to know my body better.
It is incredibly interesting to feel how strong your own body actually is and how little we can get by with.
Throughout the whole week I only ate juices and home-made vegetable broths, and yet I was even more athletically fit than before.
We live in a world of abundance. We can eat what and when we want. The amount does not matter. Therefore we eat as much as we want and if it tastes good, we even eat much more than we actually need. This awareness is very much strengthened during the week and thus offers an excellent starting point for changing one's eating style.
It is very important that you take time for fasting so that you can also take advantage of the spiritual fasting. I think it is a wonderful experience to just take care of yourself and to take care of your body. You will soon realize how valuable this can be for your future life.
